How to rotate a sideways or upside-down video

Upload a video, choose Rotate left 90°, Rotate right 90° or Rotate 180° and download the corrected file. It works with common video formats, up to about 200 MB depending on your device memory.

Why do videos end up sideways? It often happens when a phone is held the wrong way while recording, or when an app exports a video and ignores its orientation information. Some players respect that hidden orientation flag and some do not, which is why a clip can look fine on your phone and appear rotated on a computer or on a website. This tool writes the rotation into the picture itself, so the video plays the right way up everywhere.

Which option should you pick? If the video lies on its side with the top pointing left, rotate it right 90°. If the top points right, rotate it left 90°. If the picture is upside down, use 180°. After rotating, a vertical clip becomes horizontal and the other way round, so check the preview of the result.

The audio track is copied without changes and only the picture is rotated. Because the picture has to be processed again, the video is re-encoded at a quality close to the original, so any difference is practically invisible, and it takes a little longer than a simple trim. Everything runs in your browser and your video is never uploaded. If the picture is also mirrored, use the video flipper. To make a horizontal clip vertical for social media, try the social video cropper, and to shorten the clip use the video trimmer.

Frequently asked questions

Will rotating affect the video quality?
The video is re-encoded at a quality close to the original, so any difference is practically invisible.
Does it also rotate the audio?
The audio track is copied without changes. Only the picture is rotated.
Which rotation do I need for a sideways video?
If the top of the picture points left, rotate right 90°. If it points right, rotate left 90°. If it is upside down, use 180°.
Why does my video look fine on my phone but sideways elsewhere?
Some players respect a hidden orientation flag and others ignore it. This tool writes the rotation into the picture so it plays correctly everywhere.
How big can the video be?
Up to about 200 MB, depending on your device memory.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and the video never leaves your device.
