How to change the resolution of a video

Upload a video and choose the new height: 480p, 720p, 1080p or a custom height in pixels. The tool calculates the width for you so the original aspect ratio is kept and nothing is stretched or squeezed. Download the resized file when it finishes. The video can be up to about 200 MB, depending on your device memory.

Why set only the height? Because it is the safest way to resize. If you typed both the width and the height by hand it would be easy to end up with a distorted picture. Setting the height and letting the width follow keeps every proportion correct.

Common reasons to resize: making a file smaller for email or messaging, matching the resolution a player or website expects, or lowering a 4K clip to something light enough to edit. You can also pick a custom height larger than the original, but be aware that upscaling does not add real detail, it only enlarges the existing picture. If your goal is mainly a smaller file, the video compressor can aim for a specific size limit directly. To change the shape of the frame instead, for example a vertical video for social media, use the social video cropper.

Changing the resolution means the video has to be re-encoded, so it takes longer than a simple trim, and a longer or heavier video takes more time. Everything still runs inside your browser, so the video is never uploaded. Keep the tab open until the download is ready. To keep only part of the clip, cut it first with the video trimmer.

Frequently asked questions

Will the video be distorted?
No. Only the height is set directly and the width is calculated to keep the original aspect ratio.
Which sizes can I choose?
480p, 720p, 1080p, or a custom height in pixels.
Can I make a video larger?
Yes, with a custom height larger than the original. Upscaling does not add detail beyond what the source already has.
Why does it take a while?
Changing the resolution requires re-encoding the video, which is slower than trimming. Everything runs in your browser.
How big can the video be?
Up to about 200 MB, depending on your device memory.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. It is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
