How to compress a video without sending it to a server
Upload a video and choose how to shrink it. In By quality mode you pick High, Medium or Low compression, where Medium is the best starting point for most clips. In By platform size mode you pick WhatsApp (16 MB), iMessage (100 MB), Instagram (100 MB) or enter a custom size in MB, and the tool works out the bitrate needed to land under that limit. The video can be up to about 200 MB, depending on your device memory.
Why these limits? WhatsApp recompresses videos sent as a normal video in a chat, so aiming for 16 MB avoids that extra quality loss. iMessage and Instagram do not publish a hard cap, so 100 MB is used as a safe practical target for both. These are practical targets rather than official platform specifications, which is why a custom size is available too.
If the size you ask for would need an unreasonably low bitrate for the length of the video, the tool lowers the resolution automatically, for example from 1080p to 720p, to keep the result watchable. It never goes below 480p on its own. If the result is still too big, trim the clip first with the video trimmer, or scale it down yourself with the video resizer.
Everything runs inside your browser, so the video never leaves your device. The trade-off is speed: compressing video is heavy work, and a one-minute clip can take from about half a minute to a few minutes depending on your computer. Keep the tab open while it works. If you need the same video in a different format, use the video format converter. For a step-by-step walkthrough, read our guide to compressing a video for WhatsApp.
